Fermented plant extracts are one of the foundations of the FILLaCELL formulas. A short look at what fermentation is, how it changes plant material and why we choose it.
What are fermented plant extracts?
Fermentation – ancient and real
Fermentation is knowledge humanity has held for a very long time, and today it is also applied in the world of plant ingredients. It is a natural process in which microorganisms and their enzymes change the properties of plant material.
How fermentation affects a plant
The substances in plant material are not always equally available to the body. During fermentation some compounds can be broken down or transformed, so certain plant substances may become easier for the body to take up.
For example, fermentation can reduce the amount of phytic acid in certain plant materials. Phytic acid can bind to minerals such as zinc, iron and calcium and reduce how available they are.
Fermentation is a natural transformation
During fermentation, microorganisms act on the compounds present in the plant material. Some of them can be transformed, so after fermentation the material may have a different composition and different properties than before.
That is why we value fermented plants – fermentation helps bring out what is strongest in them.
Why fermentation and FILLaCELL?
We use fermented plant ingredients as one way of building considered formulas for women 40+, where we want the plant substances changed by fermentation to be easier for the body to take up. We combine them with other carefully selected ingredients, looking at their purpose, their forms, their amounts and how they work together.
For us fermentation is not simply a nice word on a label. It is one of the choices we make when it makes sense in a particular formula.
